TV Beds Explained: How a Bed With a Built-In TV Actually Works

TV bed with the screen raised from the footboard

A TV bed does one specific thing: it hides a television inside the footboard until you want it, then raises it to eye level from the pillow at the push of a button. No wall bracket, no chest of drawers doubling as a TV stand, no black glass staring back at you when the screen is off.

How the lift works

A motorised bracket sits inside a housing built into the foot of the bed. Press the remote and the screen rises out of the footboard over about eleven seconds, then locks in place at a height meant for watching from a lying or sitting position. Press it again and it lowers flush, leaving a plain upholstered footboard with no visible hinge or gap.

The lift runs from a single plug at the foot of the bed — the same socket powers the mechanism and the television, and the cable stays hidden inside the frame.

What size TV fits

Three numbers decide it: screen size, weight, and VESA mounting pattern (the bolt spacing on the back of your TV). Every TV bed we sell states its maximum screen size on the product page, and the bracket adjusts for 100mm or 200mm VESA patterns. If you already own the television, checking the model number against that limit before you order is worth the two minutes it takes.

What's underneath

Most TV beds also carry ottoman storage — a lift-up base under the mattress, on the same gas-strut mechanism used in a plain storage bed. The TV mechanism housing takes up roughly 40% of the foot end, so storage is smaller than in a bed built for storage alone, but there's still full width and about 60% of the length free underneath.

What to check before you order

  • The maximum screen size and weight for the specific bed, not just the range
  • Whether the guarantee covers the mechanism as well as the frame — many only cover the frame
  • Whether delivery includes assembly, or just a box left in the hallway

Every bed we build is made to order in our own UK workshop, with the lift and frame both covered by the same 5-year guarantee, and delivered and assembled by our own team across mainland UK. Browse our TV beds to see the full range by size and finish.
